The Criminal Defense Attorney at Robert James Trial Attorneys is responsible for providing dedicated legal representation to clients facing criminal charges, ensuring their rights are protected and advocating for the best possible outcomes. This role involves managing cases from intake through resolution, including pre-trial negotiations. The attorney will work closely with clients to develop defense strategies, review evidence, conduct legal research, and craft compelling arguments to support their cases.
A key component of this role is courtroom advocacy, where the attorney will appear at arraignments, bail hearings, pre-trial motions, plea negotiations, and trials. This requires a strong presence in the courtroom, the ability to think quickly under pressure, and exceptional litigation skills. The attorney will prepare and present arguments, examine and cross-examine witnesses, and negotiate plea deals when appropriate.
Key Responsibilities & Expectations:
Client Representation:
- Represent clients in criminal defense cases, including pre-trial, trial, and post-conviction phases.
- Develop and implement defense strategies tailored to each client’s case, ensuring their best interests are prioritized.
- Conduct in-depth legal research to analyze case facts, identify legal issues, and prepare effective defense strategies.
- Draft, file, and argue motions, legal briefs, and other documents related to criminal cases.
- Advise clients on their rights, legal options, and potential outcomes, providing clear and thorough explanations of complex legal matters.
Case Management:
- Manage a caseload of criminal defense cases from intake to resolution, ensuring all deadlines and court requirements are met.
- Investigate case facts, collect evidence, and consult with expert witnesses to build a strong defense.
- Maintain detailed case files and documentation, ensuring accuracy and compliance with legal and ethical standards.
- Attend court hearings, arraignments, trials, and other legal proceedings, representing clients effectively in front of judges, juries, and opposing counsel.
Client Communication & Advocacy:
- Provide regular updates to clients on case status, upcoming deadlines, and any significant developments in their cases.
- Establish and maintain strong, trusting relationships with clients, offering support and reassurance throughout the legal process.
- Address client concerns and inquiries promptly, demonstrating a commitment to client satisfaction and the firm’s high standard of customer service.
Collaboration & Firm Support:
- Collaborate with other attorneys, paralegals, and legal staff to ensure seamless case management and effective teamwork.
- Participate in case strategy meetings, providing insights and suggestions based on expertise in criminal defense.
- Contribute to firm development by mentoring junior attorneys and interns, providing guidance on criminal defense strategies.
- Stay updated on changes in criminal law, legal precedents, and best practices to continually enhance legal knowledge and advocacy skills.
Trial & Negotiation:
- Represent clients in criminal trials, presenting compelling arguments, examining witnesses, and making legal motions.
- Negotiate bonds, plea agreements, and reductions with prosecutors, aiming for favorable outcomes for clients when appropriate.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
Education & Licensing:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Active member of the Georgia State Bar and in good standing.
- 3+ years of experience practicing criminal law, with a proven track record of success in criminal defense.
Skills & Expertise:
- Strong knowledge of criminal law, including relevant statutes, case law, and legal procedures.
- Excellent trial skills with a strong courtroom presence and the ability to advocate effectively on behalf of clients.
- Experience in managing criminal cases from start to finish, including trial preparation, negotiation, and post-conviction matters.
- Strong research, writing, and analytical skills for preparing motions, briefs, and other legal documents.
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly and effectively to clients.
- Client-focused with a strong commitment to achieving the best possible outcomes for clients.
- Ability to work independently and manage a busy caseload while maintaining attention to detail and meeting deadlines.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with other attorneys, staff, and clients in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
